The moment we've all been waiting for has finally come:

The Winners of the Stargate SG-1 Fan Awards 2004 have been announced!

Yay!

Okay, first: congratulations to all the winners! If I like your writing or not, it is an achievement to have influenced fandom enough to win in fandom awards. Especially in these awards, where the fan get to chose the nominations and the winners, which should be obvious, but believe me, there are many fandoms where they have "committees" for chosing winners.
So, congrats!

And now, on to the slash category:

Best Author: Pepe
Okay, this surprised me. I really though we were all clear on reading her just for the porn, but apparently we are not. Let me get this straight: Pepe is not a Stargate author. I won't judge her writing in general, but she is not a good Stargate author. She does not write about Jack and Daniel. She writes about aliens taking over Jack and Daniel's bodies to have wild, kinky sex in them. Especially kinky. There's is nothing wrong with that, but it is not Stargate fiction.
Let's see whjo she was up against, maybe that'll explain why she won:
Dangermouse - not even commenting
Devra - who?
Eos - I like most of her fics, but they aren't spectacular. They are just good, solid fanfic. Sometimes that's what you need, but it won't win you an award.
Lady Grey - *tries to not remember any fics she read by her* I might confuse her with someone else though, not sure.
Otter - Now there's a good writer. Unfortunately, most people aren't intelligent enough to understand her fic. That must have been the problem, or else she'd have won.
Salieri - Same as Otter. If people understood their fic, they'd have been on first place together.
Sideburns - *yawn*
The Grrrl - We'll see in a second why she hasn't won.

I voted for Salieri or otter, can't remember.

Best new Author: The Grrrl!!!
Congratulations! You deserved it. I guess that many people didn't vote for The Grrrl as best authors because she was nominated in both categories. I know I voted for her.
The other nominees were:
Darcy - Not bad. I can recommend some of her fic, especially "Thanks be to the Ancestors", though that might be just my kink.
Gigi Sinclair - Hi Gigi! *smiles* Good author? Without doubt. But I hope I don't offend you when i say that some others were a tiny bit better. It won't keep me from reading and enjoying your fic! :-)
Jude - *laughs*
Kalimyre - Oh yes, noticed her. Interesting, and definitely worth noting, but not yet good enough to win.
Mitch H - *thinks* Nope, doesn't mean anything to me.
Orrymain - *falls over laughing* And I cannot believe that she produced 140 pieces of crap since July last year. Shouldn't anyone do something about that? Well, at least she amuses us.
Otter - See above. Her wonderful fic just isn't made for the masses.
Sage - Some very good stories, but I'm not sure how many people even know her fic. I hardly see it recced.
Salieri - see above
Sashet - Eh? I like the name. Should I have read his/her fics?
Yragg - Never heard of.

Now on to the fics. Voting on fiction is always a lot hared than voting on authros. There are some fics I absolutely adore, even though I know they ren't very good. There are some fics that I'd love to love, but one sentence or word throws me off so much that I wouldn't even rec them anymore. Taste in fiction is much more personal than taste in authors. You can know that an author isn't good, and love her fic just, and you intellectually understand that an author is very good, but still hate the fic. Anyway, let's take a look:

Best Story: A Lifetime by Sideburns
Should I read this? Did I read this? I cant remember. Sideburns stories don't interest me. They aren't bad, and I'm usually interested in the plots, but they fail to touch me. They lack character (not characterization), rhythm, feeling. So, has anyone read this and can recommend it? I think most of the nominess were nominated because of the plot. Sometimes a not-so-good author writes the story I desperately want to read, so I do and love it, even though I know it could have been done better.
I voted for either Otter or Destina, can't remember.

Best Original Character: Meret in The Quiet One by Lady Grey
Well, it could have been the beagles... Didn't vote in this category.

Best Action/Adventure: A Lifetime by Sideburns
As I said, I don't think I've read it. I voted for Lokis' Curse, of course, which would have won the Chevron Seven awards to, were it up to me. There was actually some good fic recced in this category, so go read the nominations if you haven't yet.

Best Angst (Jack/Daniel): Accommodating Daniel by Pepe
*laughs* Crack, I tell you, crack. Way too many smokers here. I have no idea who I voted for, but it could very well have been Anais's Ghost in the Machine. I love that fic.

[skipping th non Jack/Daniel stuff, I'm an OTPler today]

Best Alternate Universe (Episode "Fix"): A Lifetime by Sideburns
Sideburns, again? Huh. Why didn't Payment for Charon win?

Best Alternate Universe (Mirror Universe): Mission Impossible by Dangermouse
No, definitely not. I may be confusing this, but is this the story where SG-1 lives off-world and sits around naked in fron of their tents? Or did I fall asleep and have nightmares when i tried to read it?

Best BDSM/Non-Con: Room 4 by Pepe
Apart from the fact that I find it offensive to have BDSM/Non-con as one category, because I happen to like BDSM (Fics!), I think this time the winning was actually deserved. Of course there was also The Grrrl's wonderful "Like Flying", but I'm not sure if this is BDSM. It is very very hot, though, and this is a good excuse to read it again. Any excuse would work for me.
*goes off to read*
HOT.

Best Crossover: Fall to Heaven by Sideburns
What is it about Sideburns that makes her so special? I really don't get it. I heard somewhere that Sideburns and Alyjude from TS were the same writer, and if that is true, she has actually improved. But that doesn't mean she has to win every second category. And why wasn't Tatters nominated? Here we are, living in the fandom with the best crossover was ever written and that will ever be written, and it isn't even nominated?

Best Drama: Who Wants to Live Forever? by Sideburns
Okay, there's a conspiracy, right? And no one told me about it.

Best Humor: Elvis Has Left the Building by Salieri
Yes, yes, yes. Funniest story ever. Thank god fandom is united on this one, I was beginning to seriously doubt my sanity.

Best Hurt/Comfort: What is Essential by babs & JoaG
I like Joa G, and I also tend to read Babs's stories. Both are a bit too sweet and one-dimensional for me, and it is easy to overdose on them, but they aren't bad. Just not very special either. But I really liked "What is essential", which is long, angsty and very good.

Best Missing Scene/Episode Tag (Jack/Daniel): Boy, Interrupted by Mitch H
I don't think I ever heard of that author. I don't understand how anyone could NOT have voted for Cori Lannam's "Things He Remembers.", which is one of the best J/D fics in this fandom.

Best Novel: A Lifetime by Sideburns
Okay, this is it. As soon as I'm done writing this entry I'll read the damn story.

Best Pre-Slash: Ciphers by Destina Fortunato
Thank god, I winner who really deserved to win. Just this morning I was walking the dog, trying to figure out how I would explain to a stranger why the number plate of the car that had passed me was yellow/red and not black and white, because a "T" is such a yellow letter, and every "A" should be painted red, and suddenly I was thinking about Ciphers. Few stories have left such an impression on me.

Best PWP/Vignette (Jack/Daniel): Room 27 by Pepe
Okay, I could forgive people voting for her in the BDSM category, but not here. Not when we have The Grrrl. Then again, maybe The Grrrl can't write PWPs, because no matter what she does, the love between Jack and Daniel is so clear in her stories that you can hardly call the "without plot". Incredibly hot love stories, that's what they are.

Best Romance (Jack/Daniel): Dancing in the Dark by Pepe
'falls off chair laughing* *goes from laughing to crying*
What is wrong with these people??? Pepe does not write romance! She doesn't write J/D romance, and she doesn't write romance with her own characters. Saying "I love you" while someone has his dick shoved up your ass does not constitute romance.

Best Series: The Sunray Inn by Pepe
*cries*

Best Pairing-Focussed Story (Jack/Daniel): Dancing in the Dark by Pepe
*considers killing herself*

Okay, until this morning I thought that we all liked Pepe just for the porn. Yes, her stories are hot. Kinky, but hot. Something that this rather vanilla fandom needs, I guess. I read them, but I don't think of them as Stargate fics. I think about them as porn where I don't have to imagine what the protagonists look like.
However, I did not think that anyone thought they were good Stargate stories. The idea that people really think about Jack and Daniel that way scares me.
I don't have a problem with an author wanting to write Jack and Daniel that way, that's her business. But I can't believe that when people are asked to chose a Jack/Daniel centered story, they'd chose Pepe's fic. It scares me deeply, and I'm not just saying this. The thought that I could meet these people one day, at a con or somewhere else, really scares the shit out of me.

Last, but not least, I'd like to say Thank You to the writers. To all the writers, even then ones I don't like. Yes, even to the beagle fic author. Fandom wouldn't exist without fanfiction, and ever fic, no matter how bad, has a place in someone's heart. If you make just one fan happy with your story, you have done something special. You make people happy, and you create new worlds for us fan, everyday. Thank you for taking the time and effort to write. Thank you for publishing your fic, for throwing them out to the wolves, who, like me, take them, devour them, spit them out and then dare to make fun of what's left.
I wouldn't want to live without you.

Now you can bitch at me all you like.
