Funny (in a very honest and therefore not so funny) way article about Dollhouse reviews. For those of you who have been even more out of the loop than I am: Dollhouse is Joss Whedon's new show, staring Eliza Dushku (whom I always loved) and Amy Acker (whom I never liked).
I've only seen the pilot so far and it wasn't as bad as I feared. I know some people on my flist got really worked up about the whole prostitution thing, and yes, giving someone a new personality and then hiring them out to have sex with someone, or even just to be someone they aren't, that's prostitution. I have no other word for it. I think it was made even worse in the second part of the episode, where Faith/Echo is turned into that super-negotiatior (and boy, does Eliza Dushku NOT have the language (vocal and body) skills to pull off playing someone way more educated than she is, sorry). A if Joss was trying to tell s "hey, it's not that bad, see, they do GOOD stuff!").
Dear Joss, prostitution does not save the world. Even if it is the sex-less super-negotiator kind of prostitution.
And yet, I'm fine with the prostitution. If Joss Whedon wants to do a show about prostitution, I'll watch a show about prostitution. I just want him to do it right.
The idea of "Dollhouse" is without doubt twisted. More twisted than anything I can remember seeing on TV. But, at least in the pilot, Joss doesn't use that twistedness. Instead of showing us, well, whatever it is he wants to show us about the twistedness, he desperately tries to make us believe that Dollhouse isn't all that bad, because they saved the girl, and didn`t Echo want her "treatment"? See?
Which left me utterly unsatisfied and with mostly just one question: what's the point?
Dear Joss, what's the point? What is your show about? I know I'm not going to stick around to watch Eliza Dushku change character like underwear and safe the world/have paid sex with strangers every other day. You know that no one is going to stick around watching that. And yet, it seems as if the only thing you really wanted to to when you did that show was stick Eliza Dushku in pretty clothers and make her play every role you could think of. "Dollhouse" really is an appropriate title.
I'll give you another change, cause you are Joss and all, but frankly, I don't think this show is going to last more than five episodes. I mean, Firefly got cancelled, and that was WAY better than Dollhouse. You may be a genius, but in this case, you are just a geek playing with real, live dolls.
I'm just glad that Summer Glau wasn't available, because I LOVE Summer Glau more than anything, and I would have been very sad to see her played with like this. On the other hand, there's nothing Summer can't save, so maybe she would have been the better choice. Eliza is more Doll-like, though, so if that's what you were going for, congrats, you made the right choice.
I'll get back to you on the rest after I've seen the next ep.
